What are the main causes of adolescent drug abuse?

Teen age represents one of the most troublesome stages in life. Since the individual is undergoing so many changes both physically and emotionally, it is possible for the person to acquire habits that are uncouth or are viewed as a disgrace to the society. For most people, they have their first time of everything at this age. From drinking beer, fighting with peers; getting arrested to sexual relations. The problem comes in when this curiosity goes a level higher and the individual tries the narcotics. Adolescent drug abuse has become a menace for so many years now. On their part, the state agencies concerned are trying to create forums that will address the situation before it gets out of hand. However, understanding the main causes will help people to prevent this situation from worsening.

Adolescent drug abuse is not caused by one major factor. Instead, there are various factors that may jointly lead teenagers to this vice. One of the factors that stands out is lack of close supervision by the parents or guardians. Some parents assume that giving the teenager freedom to act like an adult will help him or her in becoming a responsible adult. On the contrary, a teenager is still growing mentally and he or she needs to be supervised when making some choices such as where to spend most of their time, their choice of friends and entertainment. Too much freedom is going to give room to experimentations without considering the after effects. If a teen decides to hang around the areas where peddlers frequent, it might be hard to avoid the desire if the thought to take part in vices crosses the mind of the teen.

In addition, the teens may also fall into adolescent drug abuse when the rules are not clear. If the parent or authority states that the teen should not smoke, does it mean he or she can do it outside the premise or is it that the teen should never smoke whether he is in or out of that premise? On the converse, the teen can take up this habit as a way of rebelling when the rules are too strict. The teen will be trying to express his or her dislike for the rules by taking up an activity that is obviously not accepted.

It is also possible to find teens who have taken up the habit to escape the conflicts in the family. This is the case in families facing separation or divorce wrangles. It can also happen after the divorce and the children are left with one parent. The teen will take to alcohol or other substances to forget, even if it is just for a few minutes or hours. In conclusion, a teen may be influenced by the habits he or she sees with the parent. If the parent is a drunkard, the teen may see this as a god thing and may want to emulate what the parent is doing.
